The article explores the making and structuring stages of the Rizzoli’s publishing house, a leading company in the industrialization of the publishing sector. The research concentrates on the period from the first decade of the 20th century to the end of the Second World War. The study examines the typographers’ technical and entrepreneurial training in early 19th century Milan and analyzes the specific area of activity of the first Rizzoli’s companies. In order to understand the development of the company’s organizational structure and management, both in short and mid-term, it is necessary to consider the society’s first partnerships, fundamental for the Rizzoli’s group nationwide success At the same time the article follows the processes for the diversification of the production which will increase the company’s competences inside the publishing market, being mainly oriented towards the large-scale production and subsequently improved by the mid 1920’s new marketing policies. The author focuses therefore on the interpenetration among the activities of the group, that in the 1930’s will also include the film production. The analysis of the company fortunes in this period highlights how the economical success leads to the emancipation of the group from its early sponsors, by gradually returning to a the typical italian family-owned business.
