Beginning with Otto F. Kernberg’s visit to the "Zurich Psychoanalytic Seminar" (http://www.psychoanalysezuerich. Ch) in 1975, some theoretical and institutional vicissitudes of the Zurich Psychoanalytic Seminar are reviewed. In particular, the discussions that occurred in those years in Zurich around Heinz Kohut’s (1913-1981) Self Psychology and his new ideas on narcissism are briefly described, and confronted with Otto F. Kernberg’s positions that were critical towards these developments. From the institutional viewpoint, the history of the relationship between the Zurich Psychoanalytic Seminar and the Swiss Psychoanalytic Association is discussed, and the role of the dissident psychoanalytic movement Platform International is emphasized. Otto F. Kernberg’s critique to the psychoanalytic training system of the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA) is seen as very close to the positions taken by Platform International several years earlier.
