This note offers a commentary on Mario G. Losano’s recent publication La geopolitica del Novecento. Dai Grandi Spazi delle dittature alla decolonizzazione (Twentieth-Century Geopolitics: from the Großraum of the dictatorships to decolonisation: Bruno Mondadori, Milan 2011), which describes the expansionist policies of the dictatorial regimes of Germany, Japan, Italy, Spain and Portugal in the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth and their implication in the sphere of law. Losano’s work sheds new light on the work of several longneglected scholars (primarily the German Karl Haushofer), some of whom supported the dictatorships, while others detached themselves from them, without abandoning the idea of world divided into a handful of GroBraume.
