The article exposes the polysemous and evolutionary nature of the notion of "job quality", both in the context of public employment policies and of scientific research. Evaluating the quality of work can, on the one hand, provide the foundation for a research agenda criticising the changes in work organisation which are oriented towards flexibility and the trends in the European Employment Strategy focusing on the unconditional increase of employement rates. When interpreted through the - reductive - perspective of flexicurity, this evaluation can, on the other hand, obscure those explanatory factors of work organisation and public action that provoke precarious employment, a weakening of the industrial relations system and a deterioration of living and working conditions.
