We have tried to read Ernst Bloch’s Das Prinzip Hoffnung not only as the last great philosophical defense of hope but also as a work of philological restitution of all those places where the utopia creeps in the theological or natural-theological, mystical, historical and philosophical traditions and literary and artistic texts. Postcolonial theory can contribute, at least in the more politically radical reconfiguration of its positions, to think even to hope as anticipatory and emancipatory consciousness. The postcolonial African novel, especially a novel like A Geraçao da Utopia, becomes a place of vantage to trace the images of hope in all its refractions.
