According to the developmental-relational approach, addiction (such as, sex, drug, internet, and food) is related to a deficit in cognitive and metacognitive skills necessary to affect regulation. This deficit is evoked by childhood traumatic experiences. Another aspect of the developmental-relational model regards the dissociative nature of addictive behaviour. Group treatment can facilitate the development of the mentalization of emotions associated with addictive behaviors. This article also presents the effectiveness of group therapy. In this kind of setting, listening to other people’s story can foster mentalization of the emotions involved in addicted behaviors.
Keywords: Addiction, mentalization, body, symptom, group, dissociation.
