This article explores the connected histories of two Abyssinian slaves, who lived in North-Western India between the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The aim is to reflect on the different opportunities that were available to the members of this peculiar social group, religiously unstable, depending on whether they resided under Muslim rule, or under Christian authority, with special reference to the Portuguese Empire, where the Inquisition kept an eye on converted people. The close study of two parallel lives allows to better understand the relationship and the knowledge that underlay the movement and the destiny of the Abyssinian slaves.
