After an Editorial Note by Pier Francesco Galli who remembers the Italian psychiatrist, phenomenologist, and historian of psychiatry Ferruccio Giacanelli (1930-2012), a previously unpublished paper of 2004 in which Giacanelli reconstructs the history of the Psychiatric Hospital of Colorno (Parma, Italy) is published. The history of the Psychiatric Hospital of Colorno, that Giacanelli himself directed from 1972 to 1978, is divided in four parts: "The birth of Parma’s Psychiatric Hospital", "The Psychiatric Hospital of the Parma province in Colorno", "The institutional closure", "The institutional rupture", "The 1978 reform of Italian psychiatry: Which future?". (This paper was read at the meeting "The end of the Psychiatric Hospital of Colorno: Proposals for the future of psychiatry in Parma", held in Colorno [Parma, Italy] on October 25, 1996).

Keywords: History of psychiatry, deinstitutionalization, Italian Law no. 180/1978 for psychiatric reform, psychiatric hospitals, community psychiatry
