The present study explores the relationship between the degree of self-determination and loneliness and the effects of an aversion or affinity for aloneness. The Frequency of and Autonomy for Solitary and Interpersonal Behavior (FASIB; Beiswenger, 2008) and the Louvain Loneliness Scale for Children and Adolescents (LLCA; Marcoen, Goossens, & Caes, 1987) were administered to 1143 adolescents aged between 14 and 20 years (M= 16.71, DS= 1.52). The analysis of the psychometric properties of the FASIB showed the applicability of this instrument in the Italian context (Study 1). The Pearson correlation analysis showed a positive relationship between autonomous motivation to solitary behavior and the affinity for aloneness. Peer-related loneliness is correlated with external motivation to solitary behavior and amotivation (Study 2). The data supported the self-determination theory perspective on the role of autonomy in solitary behavior.
