One of the first historical works published in Italy on anti-Fascism and its protagonists, La vita di Carlo Rosselli long remained the top reference text for Rosselli’s biography as well as for the history of Giustizia e Libertà, contributing in no little measure to the canonization of Rosselli as an anti-Fascist hero. This essay reconstructs the origins of Garosci’s work, exploring both his intellectual and political background and the peculiar context in which he happened to write it. After analyzing Garosci’s historiographical approach for what concerns the choice and use of sources no less than the interpretative outlooks in vogue at the time, the A. comes to point out the co-presence of two different dimensions in his work: one more properly historiographical, the other rather celebratory. In conclusion, the A. sketches out limits and merits of Garosci’s Rosselli, tracing also the influences it has exerted on scholarly and collective memory alike and underlining its lasting value for today’s historical studies.
