With a large participation of Italian and French scholars, at the end of May 2012 an inaugural conference was held in Caen for the just-opened "www./memoire-guerre" website, under the aegis of the "Mémoires de guerre. Témoignages de la Seconde Guerre mondiale" project, a fruit of the collaboration between the Maison de la recherche en sciences humaines of the University of Caen and the Mémorial de Caen. The research project took shape in 2005 under the agreement signed by the Regional Councils of Tuscany and Lower Normandy in order to develop bilateral relations in the field of education and research. The intent of both the project and the connected website is to give voice to anonymous witnesses of WWII coming from all social classes - and not only to combatants, were they servicemen or members of the armed resistance - so that their narratives on that painful experience, translated in numerous languages, may contribute to the forging of a shared European identity.
