Healthcare sector has been raising high level of expenditures determining a critical issue when observing the relation between public health expenditure growth and GDP one. Furthermore, healthcare sector is a complex one both for the organizational characteristics and for the nature of the aims. The healthcare services demand, the scientific and technological dimensions, the role of professionals, the organizational models are some of the factors that contribute to identify the high level of complexity of the health sector. As a consequence, achieving desirable level of performance is a complex matter too. Based on these arguments, the paper aims at discussing the main challenge of the Italian healthcare sector, considering also the regional organizational approaches and the different results achieved.
