The most recent historiographic debate has higlighted the importance of the Mediterranean area in the firtst half of the XVII Century. The idea that "great history" had by then left the Mare Nostrum and moved to the Atlantic was no longer in favour; this in turn led to a reevaluation of the role of the kingdoms belonging to the Habsburg Monarchy in international politics. The present study aims to highlight the contribution of Sicily to the military activities of the Spanish Crown, both in the Mediterranean area and in the heart of Europe, and especially to point out the economic, social and financial consequences of the increase of the fiscal burden made necessary by the continuous requests of socorros by the king.
Keywords: Sicily; Philip IV; Thirty Years’ War; Finance.
