Drawing on unexplored archival sources at the IRE of Venice, this article describes the contribution to welfare and professional training made by this institution, establi- shed by the testament left by the last doge, Ludovico Manin, in order to help poor children in Venice and its outskirts. The essay recontructs the work of the institution throughout the 19th century and bwyond, lating special stress on the role of the vocational schools functioning inside the charity and directed by skilled artisans. The professional and moral education thus received helped boys and girls to find job in a city still underdeveloped from an economic point of view.
