Since its origins Italian nationalism felt the need to take a stand with regard to the Catholic question. Making its bid for national leadership in a reshaping of the Italian state alternative to Giolitti’s one, Corradini’s movement fell soon in with the clerical faction. A complicated relationship indeed, made of common goals but also of sharp differences, in a mutual quest for hegemony. Consequently enough, since his approach to nationalism Alfredo Rocco posed, among other no lesser terms, the question of the attitude toward the Catholic side. Rocco’s outlook was later espoused by the Fascist regime, not without a pack of ambiguities and internal contrasts, when Mussolini himself realized that a dialogue with the Vatican was a chief requisite for the consolidation of the Fascist revolution.
