The discussion on genocides has long been characterized by the influence of social and juridical sciences, with the exception of the Shoah, which has instead received particular attention most of all by historians. The long-run counterposition (prevalently methodological and concerning the scopes and ends of research) between Holocaust Studies and Genocide Studies has given way in recent years to a new and wider discussion in which, thanks to an interdisciplinary and comparatist kind of approach, historians have regained a protagonist role. Connected with the positions maintained years ago by Raphael Lemkin in a correct philological manner, the issue of the notion of genocide has often marked a point of difference and confrontation among scholars. Today’s international debate concerning genocides is here considered in the light of this new cultural context.
