This article gives a first appraisal of the recently published Foreign Relations of the United States’ volume concerning Nixon’s policy towards Western Europe during his first term and, in particular, of the records that regard Italy. It analyses the relevance of this volume taken by the collection of diplomatic documents published by the State Department of the United States, considering also the bibliography available on this subject. The paper begins with a rapid overview of the historiography and then focuses on three specific areas: the American reaction to the normalization of diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China and Italy; the covert action deployed by the White House and personally managed by Ambassador Martin during Italy’s general elections of May 7th 1972; the plots organized by rightist extremists and high ranking Italian officers who aimed at a military coup in that period and how these influenced American policy towards Italy.
