Working in cultural and creative industries often means free and un(der)paid work. The case study we discuss in this article allows us to inquire how precarious workers try to escape from devices of subjection, which are in place in the book industry. Drawing upon a qualitative approach, combining traditional and digital social research methods, we study a self-organised network of knowledge workers, named Rete dei Redattori Precari. We particularly focus on the institutionalisation of internship as an entry point to this work, on the use of a formal-informal double register to manage both work and personal relations and, finally, on the different ways in which passions are put in value in work in the publishing industry. In conclusion, we present a political and media protest event acted by such network of precarious knowledge workers, who have been able to turn their surplus of creativity into social conflict. In such case, we show how the use of digital technologies is one of the means through which resistance to precariousness can be collectively constructed.
