The authors reflect on the development of body psychotherapy since Reich and Lowen with regard to the challenges deriving from new pathologies. Fifty or sixty years ago, patients primarily had the need to affirm their own injured individuality and to free themselves from the rigid social rules and the Super-Ego, whereas today there is a different need to build a more cohesive Self. The results of infant research and the dialogue with other therapeutical methods enrich Bioenergetic Analysis which keeps true to its tradition to work with strong emotions, in-depth body work, psychological and interpersonal dynamics.
Keywords: Self, body, trauma, borderline, emotion, development
