The paper considers both the features and the magnitude of the alleged cultural turn of 1977 in Italy. The research focuses on the three main subjects that caught Italian intellectuals’ attention during that period: 1) the relations between socialism and democracy, and the related "crisis of Marxism"; 2) the role of intellectuals visà- vis political institutions; 3) the repression of "dissent". By analyzing the press and reviewing the literature published in 1977, the article reconstructs the public debates about the three topics.
