The article highlights the problem of what could create the conditions that determine the greater effectiveness of a setting with respect to another (in reference to the case of Livia the systemic-relational one compared to the individual setting and the couple setting). It underlines the possibility that in the family setting has operated an incisive intervention by retelling the story of Livia’s mother which allowed an effective repair of a maternal imago hitherto deeply devalued and degraded. This mechanism has enabled the patient to resume her capacity for mentalization and retelling her own story. Also the article considers some theoretical issues related to alexithymia and its transmission between generations.
Keywords: Setting; Maternal Imago; Mentalization; Alexithymia; Trans-generational.
