This article discusses the theme of nationalism, whose fundamental cultural features have been examined by the historian Alberto Mario Banti: the national community as a big family, the bond of blood ties, the themes of sacrifice and of a beautiful death. In particular, the article focuses on the problem of the continuity between the nationalist culture of liberal Italy and Fascist culture and on the gendered nature of nationalism. In fact, women were assigned the task of bringing up their children in the cult of the nation and officiating in the liturgy of sorrow for those who died for their country.
Keywords: Nationalism; Fascist culture; common blood; gender history; grieving mothers.
