The belief in the centrality of dissociation for clinical practice and in the opportunities provided by the rediscovery of dissociation also as a tool for knowledge represents the motivational backdrop of the Author’s reflection on the origins of the concept of dissociation. To discuss it the Author imagines a theoreticalepistemic confrontation between Freud and Janet, two founding fathers that never met. The paper discusses the work of Pierre Janet stressing its vitality in the light of current knowledge and discusses the reasons that led Freud to abandon the paradigm of dissociation that he had widened in a psychodynamic direction. The Author wonders if it could be possible today to bridge the dissociation of the origin. And also if, based on new epistemologies and on the evolution of psychoanalytical thinking, we could foster a dialogue between the main heritage of these two authors trying to see Janet’s dissociation from a psychodynamic position in a unifying effort.
