This essay deals with the press account of the Russo-Japanese War, as it was reported by the main German and Italian newspapers. The article is focused on the contributions published in 1904-05 and takes into account in particular the impressions of commentators, public opinion interpretations and specific national contexts. The press sources analyzed in this essay are Italy’s Corriere della Sera, La Stampa, La Nazione, La Tribuna, and Il Mattino and Germany’s Berliner Lokal- Anzeiger, Berliner Morgenpost, Berliner Tageblatt, Freiburger Zeitung, Bonner Volkszeitung, Darmstädter Zeitung, and Staufener Wochenblatt. The result of this research carried out on a number of different press sources is a variety of contributions and opinions, particularly interesting for studying both the Russo- Japanese War and the image of Japan in Europe at the beginning of 20th century.
