The term mixité, has taken on a leading role in French urban planning albeit its polysemy: it hints at an ideal functional and social mixing in urban space to be attained through policies, plans and projects. The author explains the reasons for its success in France by highlighting political consensus, proposals of architects and planners, as well as the critical outlook of sociologists.
Keywords: Urban policies; urban project; social cohesion; mixité; grands ensembles.
