Dispersed urbanization is an evolution of the compact morphology traditionally observed in the Mediterranean urban landscape. The present study aims to define the main morphological and functional features of the sprawl processes typically observed in the northern Mediterranean region, focusing on its socioeconomic and environmental implications. Paradigms referring to interpretative categories such as "Mediterranean city", "spontaneous city" and "compact city", will be discussed based on a functionalist interpretation of the new "southern urbanity".
Keywords: Compact city; urban dispersion; Mediterranean region; regional disparities; sustainability.
