This paper focuses on Husserl’s approach to the problem of "normality". Starting from the consideration of the different dimensions of experience to which the concept of normality applies, a "stratified" approach to the meaning of this concept is developed. Such an approach is based on Husserl’s analyses of sensible experience and what he calls ortho-aesthetic. Taking into consideration the two criteria Husserl adopts to define normality, namely optimal givenness and concordance, the descriptive and the normative connotation of normality is discussed. On the basis of the joint consideration of these criteria in relation to both subjective and intersubjective experience an interpretation of normality based on the dynamics of the processes of normalization is finally developed.
Keywords: Normality, orthoaesthetic, concordance, optimum, perception, normativity.
