The Spring 1968 strikes inaugurated a long offensive, mainly brought on by labourers, that contributed to improve the material conditions of the working class. The workers’ world, however, did not obtain similar results at the juridical or welfare levels and remained subjected to entrepreneurial decisions: the Right in power preserved almost all the employers’ prerogatives, and so the notion of industrial democracy did not penetrate the enterprise and the workers’ stand remained utterly fragile. When in 1982 the socialist government intended to consolidate the employee rights by the Aurox Laws (on freedom of enterprise, personnel representative organs, collective bargaining and the like) the ideological attitude and the political responsiveness of the nation were radically changed: the owners could thus bring forward their liberal counter-offensive, while the industrial workers tried mostly and often in vain to save their jobs.
Keywords: France, 1968, workers strikes, labourers, owners, employers, industrial relations
