The A. analyses workers’ struggles and labour representation in late Franco’s Spain, focusing not only on the well known “diversity” of the Spanish case, but also on the elements shared in common with the labour dynamics of several democratic countries. Perfectly aware of their situation, the Spanish trade-unionists would turn to their likes abroad not only in search of solidarity but also looking for labour models; Italy in particular was an important point of reference. The exchange, however, was not one-directional; the Spanish peculiarities had themselves brought about innovations that aroused some interest on the Italian side. The developments in Spain are also examined therefore in the light of the Italian unions’ view of the Spanish experience, thus pointing out mutual influences concerning in particular conflict conduct and representation, as well as the consolidation of the so-called new trade-unionism.
Keywords: Spain, Francoism, Italian trade-unions, Spanish new trade-unionism, social conflict, labour representation
