The article focuses on the history of the Jewish community of Milan between the end of the XIX century and World War I. Taking as its main sources the Jewish Italian press and archival material, the author enlightens the main assets that, in few decades, caused the young and small Milan community to emerge in the Jewish Italian horizon. This study debates such topics as organizational practices, cultural and spiritual development and the role of Zionism in the growth of the community, although the role played by the broader local and national context in shaping the community’s character is not neglected.
Keywords: Milan, Jewish community, institution, politics, Zionism, religion.
