Duccio Bigazzi’s masterpiece, Il Portello, is considered in the context of the author’s work as a labour and business historian, as well as in the context of the cultural trends and historiographycal debate of the time. The strong points of Il Portello are its ability to bridge the gap between labour history and business history, factory and company records, social history and political history. This and the systematic use of all available sources, quantitative as well as oral, towards an accurate and all round reconstruction of the role of all actors, along with the precision of philological analysis, make up the methodological heritage Bigazzi has left us.
