Seen in Relectio de arte magica (1540), the last of his thirteen Relectiones, the interest of Francisco de Vitoria for magic seems dictated not so much, or not only, by the need to disclose critical information needed to eliminate superstition and to guard against the temptations of the occult sciences, but rather by deep-rooted moral and intellectual curiosity. Considering the matter from the perspective of its historical development, de Vitoria’s reflection is situated at a middle stage, namely between 1520 and 1570, when a kind of interruption in the production of literature can be seen. But also from the point of view of theory and practice, the position of the methodologically doubtful Salamancan is geared to scrutinizing and understanding, even before judging and punishing, the phenomenon of magic.
