This study draws some hints on the efficacy of network contracts. The ad hoc survey conducted on 281 enterprises shows that participation in a network is expected to enhance competitiveness and performance, especially for the majority of the smallest enterprises with limited intangible assets but belonging to networks headed by leading firms. It is still early to assess whether network contracts may contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of the Italian industry and become an important industrial policy tool. In fact, such contracts still involve a limited number of enterprises. Additionally, and most importantly, network participation has thus far been lowest among enterprises that would have the greatest need for such participation due to lagging behind from a technological and commercial standpoint.
