The article analyses the effect of the crisis on the young immigrants in the Italian and in the Spanish labour markets, on the basis of a comparison with the young natives. Italy and Spain are interesting cases to discuss as they both represent the Mediterranean familistic model of welfare state and the South-European model of new immigration. Moreover, with the crisis, both countries have experienced a significant increase in the youth unemployment rates, more than in other countries. On the basis of Istat - Labour Force Survey microdata, elaborated by the authors, the article shows that in both countries the 25-34-year-old immigrants have peculiar features compared both to young natives and adult immigrants. Though, the different impact of the crisis on employment - dramatic in Spain, important but less severe in Italy - has had different consequences in the two countries both on the risk that young immigrants and natives run to be unemployed and on the jobs they are likely to have.
Keywords: Young adults, Southern-European model, young migrants, crisis, unemployment, occupational segregation.
