The paper analyzes the evolution of commercial activity and capitalism from the Roman Empire to the present times, also focusing attention on the role of the Church and banks. The Author observes that the greatest threat to capitalism today is the subjugation of the real economy to financial power. According to this perspective, at the current stage of development of advanced societies, capitalism can endure only if it recovers the reasons for its success and takes inspiration from the policies that have caused it to bring affluence to many strata of society. In the Author’s view, globalization while encouraging businesses and development, tends to allow apparent corporate splits through the worldwide creation of numerous offices and companies. In the face of this, there is the need for an international treaty, at least among the most economically important States, which provides for the extensive implementation of the following rules: prohibition of anti-competitive agreements and of the creation of dominant market positions; quantitative limits to the wealth owned by companies or their groups and by individuals or families; limits to the number of stakeholders in organizations of all types or of individuals in predetermined sized companies which are of a size to constitute a significant power centre.
