This article examines the transnational forms of mobilization carried out by Italian civil society in support of the people affected by the wars that took place in former Yugoslavia between 1991 and 2000. These forms of mobilization were characterized by a strong and wide participation, and involved citizens and groups that had not necessarily been engaged in previous forms of pacifism, but shared the idea that solidarity from below could play a significant role internationally. The first part of the article provides an account of the salient features of that phenomenon, while the following section focuses on the personal experiences of Italian activists and volunteers. Using the tools of oral history and through a study of a considerable corpus of oral testimonies, this research highlights the ways in which this prolonged and intense engagement outside Italy contributed to consolidate an increased transnational openness of Italian civil society in the last decade of the 20th century.
