The article presents two sociological researches in which visual methods are used. The first survey involved a group of Rom citizens staying in a layover camp, the second one some laborers employed in seasonal agricultural harvest. Both studies were conducted in the province of Lecce and concerned groups of citizens living a state of strong marginality and social exclusion and whose long lasting presence on the territory was always managed as something perpetually transitional by the local institutions, in order to keep it to the borders and to not show to the public opinion, except in an emergency key or according to experienced narrative scripts. Starting from these two cases of study, the article reflects on the methodological but also potentially political implications that visual methods offer for understanding and transforming social contexts crossed by strong asymmetries of authority as are the various camps increasingly confining lives of a lot of foreigners.
Keywords: Camp; ghetto; action-research; viability; Roma; seasonal laborers.
