The author reviews Franco Venturi’s writings on the Republic of Venice in the 18th century, presenting them as a contribution to the study of Republicanism in the Early modern period. He also illustrates how Venturi gradually shifted his historiographical interest to new political strains and concerns with respect to the future problems of Italian unification, and how, on the other hand, in his view 18th century cosmopolitism remained in the background of all subsequent developments of a sense of Italian national identity.
