Literature underlines that different factors can determine children’s "unjustified" rejection toward a parent in divorced families: parents’ psychological characteristics; children’s pre-existing vulnerability; dysfunctional family relationships and conflict management. Trough cross-sectional study, we paired two cohorts of 30 families undergoing legal separation: In the target group at least one child rejected a parent unreasonably. We used a set of test composed by: Rorschach’s test and MMPI-2, MCMI-II, CBCL 6-18, QUIT, SAS, Conflict Scale and LTP procedure. In the target group, we found specific personality characteristics for parents, dysfunctional conflict management and a lower family coordination (p < .05). These results elucidate hypotheses that are useful to design effective interventions.
Keywords: Divorce, Alienation Syndrome, child adjustment, parenting characteristics, family functioning.
