This essay highlights the new prominence of the Mare Nostrum during the Napoleonic decade through a survey of the relationships between the Austria of Metternich and the Bourbon monarchy. In particular, it reconstructs the role of the Viennese Prime Minister in the restructuring of the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily, tracking the coordinates of a more general "Euro-Mediterranean" vocation of the Habsburg Empire, destined to compete - and clash - with the political ambitions of the Bourbons and the push toward emancipation of its elites.

Keywords: Mediterranean Sea, Bourbons, Habsburg monarchy, geopolitics, Vienna.
