This historical and epistemological work highlights how different systems of psychology, even strongly contrasting with each other, have allowed to investigate mental events from complementary viewpoints, qualitative and quantitative, as well as helped to define and develop a complex and pluralistic scientific discipline from an epistemological point of view. If you examine how the quality and quantity of behavior and mental processes, in individuals and groups, both human and nonhuman, have been investigated from alternative psychological perspectives, and how the research has been diversified over time both from a speculative and an applicative point of view, it is possible to outline a sufficiently broader framework of the epistemological complexities of contemporary psychology as a unified scientific discipline, explaining properly the dynamics and the critical issues that still characterize it.
Keywords: Scientific psychology, unity of science, epistemological pluralism, mental quality, quantity.
