This article reflects on the recent transformations that affected industrial districts, with a special focus on those located in the North-East of Italy, whose development for many has been driven for many years by such a form of organization of production. In such a context, the role of the digital transition, the emergence of new business model and the relevance of medium-sized firms in driving the transformation of North-Eastern districts is discussed. Furthermore, the article discussed the most relevant factors supporting the resistance to the change toward new configurations of districts and reflects on the socio-economic forces that need to be mobilized in order to create a shared vision of the future.
