The article focuses on siege experience in its political, social and military aspects and in its identitarian implications. In the first place it analyses what happened in some Italian towns during 1848-49 revolts, when sieges of various duration restored order after insurrections, revolutions and institutional changes; town defense mobilized social groups, giving them new visibility, and attracted people from elsewhere who, for political convictions or personal reasons, identified themselves with the fate of sieged town. In its conclusive pages the article treats two different moments in Liberal Italy’ history - the Palermo insurrection of 1866 and the "Red week" of June 1914 - pointing out specificities but also elements of continuity with 1848 events.
Keywords: Siege, Barricades, 1848-49, Town, Insurrections, Red week.
