With the statement Women never grow old, the author intends to shed light on the feminine mode of dealing with the decline of old age, even ironically. Denying the evidence, women often cling to a fantastic identity to attract men in an imaginary relationship that extends the exchange beyond biological and social ends. This pretense of youth opposes senile depression and produces, among women, a space of confrontation where each one, overcoming the temptations of envy, reflects and confirms the other’s ideal being. Its result is a woman’s old age characterized by lightness, availability, and ability to oppose time with vitality.
