This paper presents popular songs and music tracks whose main inspiration are children. The originality of the contribution is that it looks at lyrics texts as communication tools. Popular music in fact brings together the semantic views and the analysis that can be done on the situation of children. The presentation crosses Italy geographically and concentrates on the most usual themes which fall into the following categories: children and tragic stories (deaths, infanticides, oppression); children and situations of deprivation or exploitation (extreme poverty or child work); lullabies, several over the whole of the national territory; and, finally, children’s songs (nursery rhymes, ring-around-the-rosey, games, fairy tales).

Keywords: Popular music and children; regional popular songs; tragic stories in music; deprivation and exploitation in music; relativity of popular music addressed to children.
