The ’960 and ’970 were characterised by an intense legislative activity and an ample debate around the topic of urban development. In the same period, an elaborate discussion regarding the industrialisation of Southern Italy developed, as consequence of the firsts results of the industrial policies started by the Cassa del Mezzogiorno, in particular after the approval of law 634 of 1957. It was in this context that the relationship between city and industry developed in the Southern Italy, under the influence of the "Meridonalism", and with the committed contribution of urban reformers, within the political frame of the centre-left coalition. The essay discusses the guidelines of the political and technical debate on the consequences of the industrial development and urbanisation processes of Southern Italy. It analyses how recent historiography faced the topic of the southern cities, with the aim to offer the reference points in which insert the case studies discussed in this issue.
