The wide and rich historiographic and archival work by Claudio Pavone - as many recalled after his death - marked a turn in the study of the Resistance. His conceptual framework based on the intertwining of three different wars - a national, a civil, and a class war - raised an intense public debate around the delicate issue of the civil conflict, and eventually turned into a shared perspective. However, Una guerra civile (1991) represents a milestone for many more reasons: for its focus on the subjectivity of the people involved, which allowed the author to question in depth the various moralities of the Resistance; for its unique use of a wide corpus of primary sources; and for its accurate reflection on complex issues, such as the choice that everyone had to make after September 8th, and the legitimacy of violence.
