The author points out, not without controversy, the crisis of the Italian sociology of territory, that is less and less able to understand the elements of change in our society. He criticizes the loss of effectiveness in understanding territories and their populations, as well as the difficulty in providing useful elements to govern. However, the author also suggests a possible "way out" to this crisis. This way passes from the rediscovery of some classics such as the Chicago School, and recovering the idea of sociologists as Civil Servants. To conclude, he suggests use more frequently "legs and eyes" for territorial research, otherwise everything remains very theoretical and we are not able to contribute to "make people feel better".

Keywords: Chicago School, crisis, opportunity, culture of the essential, Italy, territory.
