Adopting key concepts from Edward Soja’s writings on new regionalism, the article reflects on the need to go beyond the post-metropolitan vision. An analysis of the outcomes of a Research project of national interest that had been inspired by Soja’s ideas permits the identification of elements of a new regionalism in the Italian context. The findings reveal a many-faceted regionalism with many co-existing factors, some of which are even contradictory. Emphasis is given to a historical review of the various phases of territorialisation and ‘synekism’ in the context of a vision of evolution as ‘bricolage’. The article ends by describing how the bioregion concept has potential for opening up omising lines of research aimed at creating an interpretative framework for a new urban regionalism while also preserving the specificity of the territory during the process of identifying the paths towards self-sustainability.
