Giovanni Jervis (psychiatrist, 1933-2009) developed, as an alternative to the local psychiatric asylum in Reggio Emilia, a network of community mental health services. This experience is now considered one of the key steps towards the realisation of the Italian psychiatric reform, i.e the Mental Health Act of 1978 (law 180) . Jervis was one of the leading persons of the anti-psychiatry movement. Before his arrival in Reggio Emilia, he worked with Basaglia in the therapeutic community of Gorizia. Jervis was hired, in 1969, by the provincial administration of Reggio Emilia to build a network of community mental health services with the aim to reorganise and renovate psychiatric care. This article presents the unpublished text, written by Jervis in 1972, for the public recruitment competition, organized by the local provincial administration, for the appointment of a director of the community mental health services in Reggio Emilia. The author, in an introductory note, describes the local context, in the early Seventies, in which Jervis developed one of the distinctive experiences of the Italian antipsychiatry movement. Jervis, in his dissertation, describes how to build a network of community mental health services and presents some of his key ideas on: prevention in psychiatry, the size of mental health institutions, the relationship with a psychiatric asylum, staff training and organisation, logistics and mental health building.
Keywords: Giovanni Jervis, mental health centre, anti-psychiatry movement, community mental health services, mental health reform in Reggio Emilia, local authorities and psychiatric care.
